“Yashoda witnesses the entire universe inside his mouth…” — A series of Potana Telugu Padyalu — “She sees the oceans, mountains, the Earth…” — Post II

One story most of us have heard at least once in our lives is that of Krishna eating dirt, followed by Yashoda catching a glimpse of the universe in his mouth. For those who haven’t, here is an outline of the intriguing tale.

In the last post, I wrote about a padyam which depicted Bala Krishna’s words when Yashoda asked him whether he consumed mud. This post is a follow-up to the previous post. Here, I am sharing another Potana padyam which pictures what Yashoda witnesses inside SreeKrishna’s mouth.

Padyam (Poem)

ఆ లలితాంగి కనుంగొనె

బాలుని ముఖమందు జలధి పర్వత వన భూ

గోళ శిఖి తరణి శశి ది

క్పాలాది కరండమైన బ్రహ్మాండంబున్

Ā lalitāṅgi kanuṅgone bāluni mukhamandu jaladhi parvata vana bhū gōḷa śikhi taraṇi śaśi di kpālādi karaṇḍamaina brahmāṇḍambun

Prathi-Padaardham (Analysing word-by-word)

ఆ = ఆ యొక్క (that)

లలితాంగి = మృదువైన శరీరము గల స్త్రీ (beautiful woman)

కనుంగొనె = చూసెను (saw)

బాలుని = పిల్లవాని (కృష్ణుని) (Krishna’s)

ముఖము = మొహము (face)

అందు = అందు

జలధి = నీటి నిధి (సముద్రము) (the ocean)

పర్వత = కొండలు (mountains)

వన = అడవులు (forests)

భూగోళ = భూమండలము (the Earth)

శిఖి = అగ్ని(fire)

తరణి = అంధకారాన్ని తొలగొట్టేవాడు (సూర్యుడు) (the sun)

శశి = కుందేలు గుర్తు ధరించెడివాడు (చంద్రుడు) (the moon)

దిక్పాల = అష్ట దిక్కల్ని పాలించెడివాళ్ళు (the ones who rule the eight directions)

ఆది = మొదలగువానికి

కరండము = భరణి

ఐన = అయిన

బ్రహ్మాండంబున్ = విశ్వమంతా (the whole universe)

Bhaavam (Meaning):-

అలా ఆ బాల కృష్ణుడు అనగా, సౌందర్యవతి అయిన యశోదాదేవి ఆ కన్నయ్యుడి నోట్లో సముద్రాలను, పర్వతాలను, అడవులను, భూగోళమును, అగ్నిను, అంధకారాన్ని తొలగొట్టే సూర్యుడిని, కుందేలు గుర్తు ధరించే చంద్రుడిని, అష్ట దిక్కలు యొక్క పాలికులని*, మొదలైన వాటితో విశ్వమంతా చూసింది.

When Balakrishna spoke that way, Yashoda Devi witnessed the oceans, mountains, jungles, the Earth, Fire, tharani(the one who eradicates blindness = Surya/sun), Sasi(the one who wears the rabbit mark = Chandra/moon), ashtadikpalakas*(the guardians of the eight directions) in the whole universe inside his mouth.

Ashtadikpalakas*

Ashtadikpalakas literally translates to “the ones who rule/guard the eight directions”. They are:-

1. తూర్పు(east) = ఇంద్రుడు(Indra)
2. ఆగ్నేయము(south-east) = అగ్ని(Agni)
3. దక్షిణము(south) = యముడు(Yama)
4. నైఋతి(south-west) = నిరృతి(Nirrti)
5. పడమర(west) = వరుణుడు(Varuna)
6. వాయవ్యము(north-west) = వాయువు(Vayu)
7. ఉత్తరము(north) = కుబేరుడు(Kubera)
8. ఈశాన్యము(north-east) = శివుడు(Siva)
